Search resumes to recover body of woman swept into water at Cape Spear

Emergency crews have resumed the search Thursday morning for a woman swept into the water at Cape Spear on Wednesday afternoon.

Several agencies, including Rovers Search and Rescue and the Canadian Coast Guard, are involved in the effort. "Please allow emergency personnel to carry out their work," read a statement from authorities.

St. John's Regional Fire Department Platoon Chief Dean Foley said they initially received a report around 4 p.m. Wednesday about a car in the water but later learned that a man and a woman had been swept into the ocean. The man was rescued and taken to the hospital; however, his current condition is unknown.

Speaking to CBC News at the scene Wednesday evening, Foley said there is "no likelihood" the woman survived, and the operation is now considered a recovery mission.

In an update posted Thursday morning on X, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) confirmed that crews were back on site and certain sections of the road had been closed to facilitate the search.
